Exploring Cookbooks: 1962 Boston Cooking School Cookbook

Another one I won’t present too much in depth with as the e-book for the 1918 edition is available here.

Mine is a 10th edition published in 1962. Which originally retailed for $5.95 (approximately $41.86 in today’s dollars – link).

This is a beautiful cookbook! There is not a mark in it, no dog ears, no stains and other than a little shelf wear on the jacket & some yellowing pages it looks like it has never been used. Yes, beautiful and more collectible but sad. I wonder why its never been used (or at least why it appears that way).

This book is interesting as its so completely and thoroughly modern, even at 46 years of age. However, there are relics of the past as well such as Liver Loaf (pg 191) and Aspic (pg 265) or Green Tomato Mincemeat (pg 408). The recipes for all those are pictured below…yuck!

The back of the dust jacket calls this the “household bible” and that’s really and particularly true here. Instructions on how to make almost any cut of meat, soup, bread, vegetable, cookie or cake, among the many chapters presented, are all here. Personally I like it better than the Joy of Cooking.

Not too bad of shape for a 45+ year old dust jacket. Someone took really good care of this…or neglected it completely.

French Dressing Marinade, Wine Marinade, Barbecue Sauce, Smoky Barbecue Sauce, Chicken Barbecue Sauce, Herbed Barbecue Sauce, and White Sauce (with variations).

Kidneys, Liver and Sweetbread recipes. Yummy…barf…

Quick Jellied Salads, Tomato Aspic (GROSS!), Grapefruit Jelly Salad, Avocado Mousse and Chicken Aspic. GROSS!!!

Biscuits and Scones and their endless varieties.

English Muffins, Buttermilk Rolls, Potato Biscuits, Refrigerator Rolls, Twice Baked Rolls, French Croissants and Sweet Rolls.

Mincemeat, California Mincemeat, Quick Mincemeat, Green Tomato Mincemeat and Puff Paste. I hate mincemeat…gross.

Ginger Snaps, Spice Cookies, Cornell Spice Cookies, Crunchy Ginger Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Walnut Wafers, Peanut Butter Cookies, and Brandy Wafers.

Mock Angel Cake, Quick Mix Cake, Quick Mix White Cake, Quick Mix Fudge Cake, Quick Mix Date Cake, and Chiffon Cake. I love cake from scratch! Especially easy ones like these!!

Queen Cake, Snow Cake, Burnt Sugar Cake, Chocolate Cake, Ollo’s Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Buttermilk Cake and Madeleine’s Chocolate Cake. Yummy…chocolate!!

  1. Glad to see someone else is as cookbook crazy as I am. I own about 3500+ cookbooks — nowhere near enough!

I include lists of cookbooks and other food at the end of many of my posts. My sidebar features lots of food history links, including links to digitized old and rare cookbooks.

Where can I buy this cookbook? I left mine in a shopping cart and am heartbroken without it!
